Have you ever considered the profound impact that a deep understanding of anatomy can have on the success of your yoga business and your monthly income? I’m sure you have long realised that knowing anatomy is crucial for teaching, practicing, and demonstrating asanas. But what about your business?
Understanding anatomy can help you in many ways, including gaining more clients; you simply need to know when and how to apply it.
There are several methods to go about this initial, very basic step. Consultations, whether conducted in person or virtually, in groups or one-on-one, offer a fantastic opportunity to demonstrate your professionalism. There are various kinds of consultations that you may want to think about for yourself.
Make a good first impression by using a scientific and medical approach when explaining how you structure your yoga session. It is critical to show yourself as a true professional, and the likelihood that the client will stay with you and not go to competitors will be much higher.
For instance, during a consultation with a prospective client who is pregnant, don't just say: "We'll practice once or twice a week, I'll guide you with back stretching movements and hips opening, so that you can feel better etc."
Tell her that you will exclude passive stretching in classes because the expectant mother's body is now actively producing the hormone relaxin, which is already contributing to an increase in joint flexibility and mobility, so that ligaments and muscles in the pelvic area can get ready for labor. However, overstretching in asanas may lead to joint instability and actually cause an injury.
Do you feel the difference in these two yoga teachers?
Don't relax if the client is already with you! This is where sharing anatomy knowledge can help more than you might expect.
I recommend consulting after the class, when everyone is relaxed and happy, and I encourage you to show off your knowledge! Tell your student what you did today, why, and how they benefit anatomy-wise (for the client, this is the language of "Oh, she is talking about my health”). Your current students will start recommending you more, not just by saying “Her classes are great!" but with words such as "She has a very high level of professionalism and deep anatomy knowledge; she ensures to adjust our sessions as per my current needs and health condition, so I can benefit the most.".
Another great example is to remind your existing client who was diagnosed with a herniated disc about certain lifestyle adjustments, such as avoiding leaning forward on straight legs, and explain to him or her the potential pain associated with rounding the lumbar region. Inquire as to whether they still sit cross-legged at work; this is an additional chance to discuss the spine and how it reacts to different seating positions.
Do you see how it is making you a better yoga teacher?
It is great to be prepared with sequencing and cuing; however, it will benefit you more if you share some facts and speak about certain asana benefits in anatomical language. Whether you teach a group class or an individual session, it will make you stand out as a yoga teacher.
For example, share the advantages of the Legs Up the Wall or Viparita Karani pose, discuss the importance of body restoration, how this asana activates the parasympathetic nervous system, and what the benefits of this activation are.
Besides consulting, there are more ways to make money on your yoga anatomy knowledge.
If you hold a strong expertise in anatomy, you can offer specialised workshops or continuing education courses for other yoga teachers seeking to deepen their understanding of anatomy and alignment. These workshops can attract yoga instructors from all over the world, whether you do them online or offline.
It is not only a great way of generating additional revenue but also a great opportunity to potentially establish yourself as a respected authority in the yoga community.
Anatomically informed yoga teachers can create and sell online courses, webinars, or digital workshops covering topics such as anatomy fundamentals, injury prevention, or advanced alignment techniques.
Because you deliver valuable educational content online, you can reach a wider audience beyond your local community and generate passive income streams.
Here is some space for creativity! You might consider developing and selling anatomy-themed products such as anatomical yoga mats, posters, or educational materials (for example, Biomechanics in Asanas). By leveraging your expertise to create unique and informative products, you can diversify your revenue streams and capitalise on the growing demand for anatomically accurate yoga accessories and resources.
Yoga teachers knowledgeable about anatomy can organise specialty retreats or workshops focused on specific anatomical areas or conditions, such as back pain relief, joint mobility, or prenatal yoga. These specialised events attract dedicated participants willing to pay premium prices for in-depth instruction and transformative experiences, resulting in higher revenue per attendee.
As you see, there are multiple ways to make some additional income. Integrating anatomy knowledge into yoga instruction not only enhances the quality of your teaching but also creates opportunities for increased revenue.
