I used to think burnout was something that only happened in the corporate world. When I worked my 9-to-6 job, experiencing burnout at work felt inevitable—tight deadlines, long meetings, and constant pressure left me completely burned out. But when I finally left my corporate career to follow my passion—teaching yoga and coaching yoga teachers—I was convinced that I’d never suffer from burnout again.
How wrong was I?! My burnout came out of nowhere—or at least, that’s how it felt. Suddenly, I was ready to give up on social media (and I did for a while). I stopped enjoying teaching and working with my students. I felt like I had to practice yoga just to post something online. But in reality, there were so many symptoms I had been experiencing for months—but I ignored them. I had focused so much on growing my business that I completely neglected self-care for entrepreneurs—something I now see as essential.
Burnout doesn’t just happen in traditional jobs; it can sneak up on you even when you love what you do. Many yoga teachers don’t recognize the signs of burnout at work because we assume that doing what we love should always feel energizing. But the reality is, overcommitting, lack of boundaries, and constantly giving to others without replenishing ourselves can lead to physical exhaustion, emotional fatigue, and even job burnout and depression.
If you’ve been feeling exhausted, uninspired, or even questioning your path as a yoga teacher, you’re not alone. Burnout is real, and it can creep in quietly. But the good news? Recognizing the signs early and making small shifts can help you recover your passion and sustain a long, fulfilling teaching career.
Burnout doesn’t happen overnight. It creeps in slowly, disguised as exhaustion, frustration, or a loss of passion. Here are ten key signs of burnout at work that every yoga teacher should watch out for—plus actionable steps to help you recover and prevent burnout so you can continue teaching with joy and balance.
You wake up exhausted, drag yourself to class, and feel completely drained—even after a full night’s sleep. No matter how much rest you get, the exhaustion doesn’t seem to go away. This kind of physical exhaustion from work can make teaching feel like a struggle rather than a passion.
Prioritize quality sleep, hydration, and nutrition. Reduce your teaching load if possible and schedule non-negotiable downtime. If you’re feeling depleted, incorporate restorative yoga, breathwork, or meditation into your routine.
The joy you once felt while guiding students is fading. Your classes feel uninspired, and you’re simply going through the motions. Experiencing burnout at work can make you question why you started teaching in the first place.
Reignite your passion by switching things up—try a new teaching style, attend workshops, or take a break from teaching to focus on your own practice. Remember why you started and allow yourself space to rediscover that excitement.
You find yourself easily frustrated—by late students, repeated questions, or small studio issues that never used to bother you. This emotional imbalance is one of the clear yoga career burnout symptoms that can affect both your work and personal life.
Practice mindfulness and self-awareness. Identify stress triggers and create small rituals—such as journaling (my favorite!), deep breathing, or setting clear studio boundaries—to maintain your emotional balance.
Your body constantly feels sore, and small injuries take longer to heal. Over-teaching and demonstrating too much can lead to physical exhaustion from work, making it harder for your body to recover.
Teach smarter, not harder. Use verbal cues more than physical demonstrations and balance intense classes with restorative ones (Personally, I lead all my classes with voice—whether online or in the studio. It saves my energy and allows students to focus entirely on themselves.). Prioritize self-care with massage, stretching, and proper warm-ups before teaching.
You used to love rolling out your mat for your own practice, but now it feels like just another task on your to-do list. Many yoga teachers neglect their personal practice, which leads to getting burnt out at work.
Reconnect with yoga for yourself. Try different styles, take classes from other teachers or go back to your favorite teacher to re-discover your personal practice; make time for personal movement—even if it’s just 10 minutes a day. Let your practice be about you, not your students.
Despite your dedication, you struggle financially or feel undervalued. Many yoga teachers experience job burnout and depression when they feel like they’re working hard but not being properly compensated.
Reevaluate your pricing and class structure. Explore multiple income streams, such as private sessions, workshops, or online courses. Don’t be afraid to charge what you’re worth—your time and expertise matter (This is something I teach in my Individual and Group "Yogipreneur 101: Yoga as a Business" Sessions. You can check it out here).
The thought of another session feels draining rather than fulfilling—one of the biggest signs of work burnout. You take on too many classes, workshops, and privates, leaving yourself with no time to recharge. Saying yes to everything may seem necessary, but it can lead to signs of job stress and burnout.
Step back and evaluate why you’re feeling this way. Are you overworking? Do you need a break? Consider taking time off, exploring different teaching formats, or adjusting your schedule to make space for inspiration.
Social media can be a powerful tool for yoga teachers, but when you start dreading content creation, engagement, or even logging in, it might be a sign of burnout. If posting feels like a chore rather than a way to connect with your community, you may need to reassess your approach.
Take a step back and set boundaries. Schedule content in advance, repurpose old posts, or take a break altogether. Focus on quality over quantity—your audience will appreciate authenticity more than daily useless reels. If necessary, outsource tasks or simplify your strategy to make social media feel less draining.
You answer student messages at all hours, take on extra classes even when exhausted, and struggle to say no. Overextending yourself is a fast track to suffering from burnout at work.
Establish clear boundaries. Set specific communication hours and stick to them. Let go of the fear of disappointing others—your well-being is just as important as your students’.
You start to wonder if this is really what you want to do. Thoughts of quitting become more frequent, making you doubt whether teaching yoga is sustainable in the long run.
Reflect on what brought you to teaching in the first place. Maybe a shift in focus—such as working with a niche audience or launching an online program—could reignite your passion. It’s okay to evolve and adapt your career to suit your needs.
I always say that preventative care is better than treating a disease that has already happened. Here are 10 checkpoints I started doing regularly so that I don’t fall into the trap of burnout again:
1. Am I handling too many classes? I’ve written down my personal limit to avoid overcommitting.
2. Do I maintain my personal yoga practice? Do I meditate daily?
3. Do I take regular time off? Weekends and holidays are non-negotiable.
4. Do I create enough content in advance for social media and YouTube so that I can take extra time off whenever needed?
5. Do I have multiple revenue streams? I make sure I don’t rely on just one source of income.
6. Do I spend enough time with my family and friends? Is it limited to weekends, or do I make time for them during the week as well?
7. Do I listen to my body and mind? Am I ignoring signs of exhaustion, stress, or irritation?
8. Do I schedule self-care activities? Massages, walks, hobbies—anything that recharges me.
9. Do I say “no” when needed? I protect my time and energy without guilt.
10. Do I still feel joy in teaching? If not, I ask myself what needs to change.
These simple check-ins help me stay mindful of my well-being and keep my yoga teaching career sustainable. Burnout prevention isn’t a one-time fix—it’s a habit!
Experiencing burnout at work can happen to anyone—even yoga teachers who love what they do. The key to preventing burnout isn’t just about taking a break when you’re exhausted; it’s about building sustainable self-care habits that protect your energy, passion, and well-being.
Teaching yoga should be a fulfilling, lifelong journey—not something that leads to physical exhaustion from work or career burnout symptoms. So, take a moment to check in with yourself: Are you feeling energized and inspired, or are you suffering from burnout at work? If it’s the latter, now is the time to reset.
Self-care for entrepreneurs—especially yoga teachers—is essential. Remember, you can’t pour from an empty cup. Overcoming burnout at work starts with prioritizing yourself—your students (and your business) will thrive when you do.
